Sleep was commissioned by Austin-based vocal ensemble Convergence and the Austin New Music Co-op. It was part of “Vessel: New Works for Vocal Ensemble” and performed on July 21, 2012 at the Mexican America Cultural Center in Austin, TX.
The concert was funded by grants from Texas Commission on the Arts and New Music USA.
Convergence comprises Gitanjali Mathur (soprano), Laura Mercado Wright (mezzo-soprano), Paul D'Arcy (tenor), and Cameron Beauchamp (bass).
“Sarah Dutcher’s Sleep was the only a cappella offering of the evening. Starting with a simple melody performed by Gitanjali Mathur, a polyphony developed, delivered as a closed-mouth hum among the players. Sleep drifted quietly through the hall, vowels morphing from one to the next in a slow six; a soft, short, drifting lullaby.” (Andrew Sigler, New Music USA)
Nominated for Best Original Composition for the 2013 Austin Critics Table Awards.
